The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a girl containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
