The East African nation Receives Historic Artefacts Following a Century Holding in Germany
Around 12 historical objects have been formally returned to the Ethiopian nation following staying by a household from Germany for in excess of a century.
The treasures, originally collected in the early twentieth century by the German then-envoy to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his spouse Hedwig, were transferred on Wednesday to the research center at Addis Ababa University.
The collection featured royal crowns, shields and canvases, all considered as historically significant in Ethiopia.
"The treasures still stand as a symbol of the enduring and positive connection between Germany and the Ethiopian people," stated Germany's envoy, Germany's ambassador to the East African country.
Dr. a professor, whose father was born during the household's assignment in Ethiopia, presented the objects at a ceremony witnessed by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He stated that the household's goal to return the treasures was to "share their splendor with the audience and safeguard the heritage and past connected to my parent's birth."
The items were either considered donations or purchases, based on the family.
"We want to express gratitude to Professor Weiss's relatives for actively expressing their deep appreciation for the nation by meticulously preserving these artifacts and crucially securing their repatriation to their legitimate homeland," stated the minister of tourism.
The minister continued that the artefacts would soon be available to the people for research and academic study, terming the move a landmark in preserving Ethiopia's national treasures.
"Efforts are ongoing to repatriate historical items that are held in the hands of collectors and organizations around the planet," she affirmed.
In the era of colonialism in the African continent, numerous of cultural items were plundered.
This request by the continent's states for the return of stolen artefacts has been responded to by a degree of progress in lately - though a number of items are only on short-term display.
Back in 2022, the German government was the first state to give back a selection of the renowned Benin Bronzes to the West African nation in a bid to address its "dark legacy."
