Pacific Bluefin Fish Fetches Historic Price of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; ÂŁ2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which manages outlets throughout Japan and abroad.
"The year's tuna signals fortune," remarked the business owner, a notable figure at the annual January sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is renowned for submitting record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Past
After the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated rapidly."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants nationwide.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Swift Service
The record-priced tuna was promptly processed for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," remarked one happy customer.
