Hardline Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
Following a conclusive final ballot, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Win
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Focused On Security and Migration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly centered on promises to tackle rising crime and radically restrict migration.
He consistently cited migrants, particularly the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the race, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face deportation.
His plans included U.S.-style measures such as erecting detention centers, high walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Broader Shift
Many analysts interpret Kast's success as aligning with a wider conservative trend in South America, similar to this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further view it as a part of the predictable swing of power between left and right leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Clear Majority
In spite of his clear popular vote victory, Kast does not have an absolute majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various conservative parties are combined together.
This political situation could challenge his plans, such as a promise to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to provided concrete steps.
"We have many aspects about what a Kast administration will be that remain unclear because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," noted a political professor.
The analyst added, "Regarding the economy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts common for the right. However the area with much less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the race."
