A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended not long after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene showed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He was convinced the blast had taken place on a level above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
