Former UK Soldier Charged of Killing Kenya Female Shows Up in Courtroom

A man has appeared in court as deportation processes commenced in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a female from Kenya who was murdered near a UK military installation in 2012.

Robert Purkiss, 38, who is originally from Greater Manchester, showed up in the magistrates' court in Westminster on Friday, and informed the court he planned to fight the extradition request. Reports indicate that he was detained on the evening of Thursday.

A warrant for arrest for Purkiss was authorized by a court in Nairobi in September. Legal prosecutors stated before the Kenyan court that the individual had been charged with a single count, of killing, and that the government of Kenya would pursue his extradition to answer to accusations.

The defendant served formerly as a medic with the Lancaster Regiment, the army unit for the northwestern England, including on missions to Afghanistan.

Wanjiru, twenty-one, a beautician who had a baby daughter, went missing after a evening out, and her body was discovered after two months in the grounds of the lodging where she had last been seen.

No one had previously been arrested or indicted in relation to her death. The arrest of Purkiss followed a fresh police investigation, which was initiated after a report in the year 2021 by a Sunday newspaper, in which the media outlet contacted several current and former soldiers in the unit.

This inquiry has been spearheaded by Kenyan detectives, which, under a mutual defense pact, retains jurisdiction in the case.
